GSV 1.0 (Giant-Ass Image Viewer) http://mike.teczno.com/giant/pan/ reproduces the same functionality as Google Maps, that is, draggable and zoomable images in your browser. It is a javascript on the client side and a python script on the server side which calculates which tiles are needed, cut them on the fly, and send them back to the client.
http://www.zoomify.com/ez/ uses a Flash approach.
